Generally speaking, this is right on. Very little can damn a person better than thinking it’s everyone and everything else’s fault (even when it is.) Why? Because for something to be useful in this context, you need to be able to do something about it. Does your professor suck? Sure. But them sucking doesn’t let you off the hook - you’re still responsible for learning the content.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Locus of control and confidence are very vital aspects of success. Unfortunately, they are also exploited by many “self-help” gurus so that a coherent discussion of them is nearly impossible.
