The Writer’s Tools extension adds a useful new menu to the popular, open source office suite OpenOffice.org that bakes convenient tools like Google Translate, an online dictionary lookup tool, email backup, remote backup to an FTP server and more directly into OO.org

Okay, I’ve not made it the most secret of things that I’m not the biggest fan of OpenOffice. Yes, it’s open source and free and such - and that’s dandy. But generally speaking, I’ve always found it clumsy, ugly and it works poorly on a Mac, and since I’ve always got a few MS Office licenses lying around, it’s never been necessary for me to tolerate it. iWork and Office 2007 also spoiled me rotten, and now I actually like a solid and pleasant UI (and whatever one may say of OpenOffice, the UI is a bit lacking.)

Still…. This extension looks pretty amazing. I may install it and deal with how poorly it behaves on a Mac just to test it. For those of you on Windows or Linux, however, take a look!
