One of my favorite tools while studying, when I’m not in the mood for music, is a website called iSerenity. You may have noticed it in my link list.
It’s a simple little website that plays white noise, or as they put it “ambient sound environments.” It comes with a pleasant little slideshow as well, but generally I just put my headphones on and begin my work in ignorant bliss of the chaos around me.

I love iSerenity. I always use it if I’m not listening to music. The rain one is great for trying to take a nap. The only thing that would make it better is if they were downloadable. I’d like to have several of them on my iPod for the morning commute. That is if I ever get tired of the new The New Pornographers LP.

Don’t you think that this white noise is totally disturbing? It also has some kind of rythm in it somehow. As I tried it, I found it rather disturbing and distracting

@Riley - I’m sure something like this is available, somewhere. Maybe search around for “ambient noise” mp3 or something.
@Julian - It doesn’t bother me, but different strokes for different folks and all that. I do think it’s not proper white noise in that there is some sort of rhythm, though.

Riley, there is a downloadable utility called Brainwave Generator that allows the recording of the sounds. It has a huge number of presets for different needs and states of mind. The website is:

Hope it helps.

@Marting - I’m running Linux so it’s a no go. It did sound VERY interesting though. If they ever port it I’ll definitely download it.
