eMusic - You Now Have No Excuse

eMusic LogoI imagine at least some of you have heard of eMusic. Others of you have perhaps even tried it. For those of you who don’t know, eMusic is the net’s second biggest music store behind iTunes. However, their business model is very different than Apple’s.

I am a very avid eMusic user, and rarely ever buy music from iTunes because I a)dislike the DRM (digital rights management) and the price.

Cheaper, you ask? But iTunes is only a dollar a song! Yes, but for $15 bucks I get 50 songs a month from eMusic (and they have smaller and bigger packages as well.) And yes, they don’t have all the music iTunes does - a lot of the top 40 probably won’t be there, but they have a very wide range - from the New Pornographers (one of my favorites) to Paul McCartney and it is expanding all the time. It’s also in lovely, compatible with everything, mp3. So you can put it on whatever device you own, put it on a CD, whatever you like with no arbitrary restrictions.

Why am I mentioning it now? Well, eMusic has released a new bit of software that makes using eMusic much more easy called eMusic Remote. It works on Mac, Windows and Linux and it essentially makes the process of downloading new music almost as easy as iTunes. On a Mac and Windows you simply click download and it places it in your iTunes library for you (or another, if you so choose.)

So, give eMusic a try. They do have a free trial, and it results in 50 new songs for you if you do. Hell, use one of my links and I’ll get 50 new songs, too! Or you can simply go to eMusic.com and sign up yourself (without giving me any music, you bastard).
