A Mistake

I made a bit of a gaff in my last post. I said that WriteRoom had a better alternative. After being contacted by Jesse Grosjean of HogBaySoftware developer of WriteRoom and original developer of Mori I took WriteRoom and the alternatives out for a spin.

It should be noted, I don’t use these environments for writing. I really don’t care for them, personally, but I do see the appeal. I did try WriteRoom before, and find it to be improved greatly (at least to my recollection, but found that if I wanted to use such an environment Nisus Writer Express offered such an ability without an additional purchase, as did Scrivener and I’d generally go with the more robust app rather than a specialized tool.

That being said, after testing the alternatives, including the free JDarkRoom, WriteRoom definitely does a better job at what it does than just about anyone. If you are looking for a full screen text editor, WriteRoom is definitely worth a look.

I still find Mori to be slightly inferior to the other products mentioned - but personal information managers, as mentioned in an earlier post, are highly subjective pieces of software - we all deal with info in different ways.

Both, however, are heads and tails above the other products in the previously mentioned Pack. Not because the pieces of software are bad pieces of software, but rather they are of limited use to most students and a lot of it easily done by free alternatives out there which are not appreciably better or worse at least as far as I’ve tested such software, and as far as I would care too. A family tree program is not really essential for most college students, as is the focus of this blog, nor a complicated periodic table.

So, again, I apologize to HogBaySoftware and Jesse for my hasty and expired opinion regarding WriteRoom. I do like to be corrected, by the way, and if I make such a mistake I certainly wish it to be pointed out so that I can do something about it. I do have an opinion about some things, but I certainly realize that I’m very, very, very capable of making a mistake or not always being entirely fair - but I will try to be.
