11 Ways to Optimize Your Mac

This article by Ed Eubanks Jr. over at LowEndMac has been running around the blogosphere the past few days, and I believe it time to run it to shore and share it with you fine folks. Mainly because I went through this last night (while I was supposed to be reading about anthropology) and re-gained about 3 gigs of space and significantly sped up my iMac.

Moving from a PC, it’s hard to get used to the fact that I don’t always have to be tweaking and worried about system performance using a Mac. At least my Mac. I can have 10 apps open and not worry at all, and I admit to a certain degree of anxiety that I am going to be missing some vital, imaginary, processing power. But still, there is no crime in being efficient (as long as your drive towards efficiency doesn’t lead you to efficiency - see above!) These little tips really had an impact on my Mac.

MonolingualBut, if I was going to suggest only one of his 11 points, I’d go with is the use of Monolingual, which is some pretty damn impressive donation-ware. As I said, I received 3 gigs back by stripping out the languages and unused architectures from my computer. Did you know your Mac could use Klingon? Or Cherokee? Very cool - but useless to me. I left English, Greek and Hebrew intact and left it at that.

Another quick speedup tip, care of Hawk Wings (the Mail.app blog extrodinaire), is a trick in terminal to speed Mail.app up significantly. I’ve about 9k emails in there - it was a substantial change.

As with all things of these natures - please back up your important information first. I had no troubles, but you never know.
